| What is a Hopi
Ear Candle?
The Hopi candle is not
a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out
of cotton flax. To stiffen the flax, they are
impregnated with extract of honey and herb oils
(in particular chamomile, sage and St Johns
Wort), the healing properties of which have
been known to the Hopi tribe for hundreds of
years. The making of the candles is a complex
process and all genuine Hopi candles are made
in the traditional manner.
How Do They Work?
Because the candles are
hollow tubes, their function is similar to that
of a working chimney. The heat and natural ingredients
of the candle combine to draw out impurities
into the tube, as pressure in the head and ears
is released.
The Treatment:
Because the treatment
is gentle and lasts for up to an hour you are
able to relax during that time! You rest on
your side and the therapist puts the candle
just inside your ear lighting the end, which
will then burn slowly, during this time you
will be aware of a pleasant crackling sound
and soothing warmth. As the candle burns it
produces a gentle local heat which, combined
with the natural oils and herbs soften the wax
and draw it into the base of the candle, because
of the pleasant heat of the candle there is
also a massage effect on your eardrum.
The candle is then removed and the ear and surrounding
area is massaged, the whole procedure is then
repeated on the other ear. This is followed
by a complete facial massage, which concentrates
particularly on the sinus areas. A wonderfully
relaxing and beneficial experience, not to be
missed!
